Westonka Pet Expo

westonka By: Barb Kelley

On August 6, Julie, Lou, and Barb and 7 of our ambassador rabbits went to Mound for our favorite Pet Expo of the season. For some reason the residents of this little community are very in-tune to rabbits, and their questions are heartfelt and truly interested. We always come away knowing we have provided valuable information to improve the lives of rabbits.

Then we also have the benefit of the blessing of the animals to send our families forward to another year of making the world a better place.

Thanks Mound for always inviting us!

Animal Humane Society Day Camps

AHS By: Barb Kelley

For the 7th year our educators, and their endlessly patient rabbits, presented a two hour rabbit educational programs at the Animal Humane Society day camps. Working only with 4th and 5th graders, we offer our program at Coon Rapids, Golden Valley, St. Paul, Woodbury, and Buffalo a total of 19 times over the summer interacting with over 300 campers.

AHSThe campers sat in chairs around the agility course with rabbits on their laps. Throughout the program the rabbits were moved frequently so each camper experienced the different fur types and personalities. We focus our program on the essentials: 1) indoor living 2) spay/neuter 3 proper diet 4) Handling. We also have many fun facts about rabbits and how they think, act, and live. Did you know that rabbits have babies every 28 days and can become pregnant again immediately following birth?

AHS Then the jumping rabbits take the stage and wow everyone. We finish our presentation with everyone on the floor and the rabbits (and guinea pigs) hopping and interacting with each other and visiting with the campers. These young people are the future of animal care. The knowledge they absorb at camp will better the lives of animals now and in years to come.

This amazingly valuable project is not possible without the staff who is literally "always on". Jeff G who leads the Woodbury/St. Paul group and his right hand Shannon D. Barb K's amazing team who work at Golden Valley, Buffalo, and Coon Rapids: Catherine, Megan T, Justine, Ila, JoEllen and her niece Stella (who doesn't own a rabbit but is always there), and Lisa P and her daughter Sarah who started the year with guinnea pigs and are now new rabbit owners. Then there are the rabbits - all 31 of them (and not to forget Chuck the guinea pig). Kind, patient, interactive, and funny even when they work two camps in a day. Thank you to everyone!

hoppy endings and intakes

Alexander Back in 2005 Alexander and Abigail were Barb's first rabbits—a long, long time ago. For nine years this wonderful little man worked with Barb out in the public.

He has earned his wings.

Last September he lost the vision in both eyes. He retired to spend his days with his bonded friends, Lenny and Realta. One Thursday, with no illness and no meds, his old body just grew tired and he was unable to get up.

Go in peace sweet friend. The others are waiting.

KocoaWe said “goodbye” to our beloved bun, Kocoa, who has been in our family for 11-1/2 years. We miss his sweet fluffiness and little kisses. We think of him when we see a sunbeam across the carpet as one of his favorite places was sitting in a sunbeam. He will always have a special place in our heart.

Foster Homes

The foster program is an essential part of our mission. Without our dedicated foster families we wouldn't be able to help the many rabbits we do each year. Providing a foster home for one of these rabbits can be a very rewarding experience and literally saves a life!

MCRS will supply all the equipment you will need - cage, litterbox, litter, food & hay. MCRS also covers any medical expenses for foster rabbits. Your only out-of-pocket expense is for the fresh greens & veggies you feed your foster rabbit - and even that is a tax-deductible donation!

All you need is:
•a space in your home for a cage & some play space for the rabbit.
•an hour or so daily to provide socialization and care.
•a willingness to learn about the proper care of rabbits.
•convenient access to email is strongly preferred.
•ability to transport rabbit to periodic adoption events is preferred, but not required.

Please contact MCRS at info@mncompanionrabbit.org if you are able to help. Thank you!

Volunteers are not just important to MCRS, they literally are MCRS. Volunteers do everything that needs to be done within the organization from picking up the mail to caring for homeless rabbits to keeping financial records to scooping litter boxes.
